Newsletter 027

Dear

I've just finished 'Egyptian Hieroglyphs' for iPad & Blackberry Playbook - This is a project that has been ticking away for the past year - see below for details. I always have a number of slow burning projects on the go - the two I'm working on at the moment are the iPad version of my book 'Ancient Egyptian Anecdotes' and 'the Treasure Thieves' an ancient Egyptian story which I'm collaborating on with artist Sheila Cartwright.

This newsletter contains eight news items - check out the discovery of a new pharaoh Senakht-en-Re, four new video documentaries including 'The Assassination of King Tut' narrated by actor John Hurt and for my German subscribers there are links to some German language websites on ancient Egypt.

The featured website is The Griffith Institute - University of Oxford - a valuable resource for the study of ancient Egypt and the Near East. It houses a fascinating archive detailing Egyptologist's work, including its founder Francis Llewellyn Griffith, Sir Alan Gardiner, Jaroslav Cerny and Howard Carter.

Ancient Letters

A soldier's life

"Let me tell you the woes of the soldier: he is awakened at any hour; he toils until the sun sets; he is hungry; his belly hurts; he is dead while yet alive. When he receives the grain ration, having been released from duty, it is no good for grinding.

"When he is called up for Syria, he may not rest and there are no clothes or sandals. His march is uphill through mountains. He drinks water every third day; it is smelly and tastes of salt and his body is ravaged by illness.

"He is told, 'Quick! forward, valiant soldier! Win for yourself a good name.' When victory is won, the captives are handed over to His Majesty to be taken to Egypt. The foreign woman faints on the march; she hangs herself on the soldier's neck. His knapsack drops; another grabs it while he is burdened with the woman.

"His wife and children are in their village; he dies and does not reach it. But if he does come out alive, he is worn out from marching."
