Newsletter 019

This will be the last newsletter of 2009 the next one will be in January.  My original intention was to publish these newsletters every month but with the pressures of work and the need to put bread on the table I seem to be only doing them every two months.

This newsletter tells the story of Amenemhab, a soldier who got blood on his clothes but enjoyed his work. There is a free 2010 calendar for you to printout; some great videos and the latest Egyptology news. Also check out the Heritage Key website and the updated Theban Mapping Project which was the featured website in my first newsletter.

I’ve really got into posterous recently - the simplest blogging platform out there. You just do it all by email even from your phone. Ancient Letters

Amenemhab 18th Dynasty
Amenemhab was one of Thutmose III’s generals. The reliefs in his tomb describe the king’s battles in great detail from a personal perspective and corroborate official accounts.

Amenemhab appears to have been a vigorous fighting man frequently soaking himself in blood; luckily Thutmose had a supply of replacement garments for him. He once killed a charging horse by cutting out its belly; a messy job no doubt. On another occasion he saved the king's life by cutting off a charging elephant's trunk - luckily we have two accounts of this event.

“Ra made me do something very brave at the sea of Niy. He made me run across a troop of 120 elephants and My Majesty fought them. Never had the like been done by a king since the god who first received the white crown of Upper Egypt. I say this without boasting and without lie therein“.

Amenemhab’s account of the same incident
“I beheld an excellent deed which the Lord of the Two Lands did in Niy. He hunted 120 elephants, for their tusks. The largest among them attempted to fight face to face with his majesty. As for me, I stood in the water between two rocks and cut off his hand while he was alive in front of his majesty. Then my lord rewarded me with gold and three changes of clothing”

Surely untidy work if it required three changes of clothing. But despite all the blood, gore and laundry bills he seems to have enjoyed his job – he says after another episode of hearty action. “That caused joy to take possession of my heart and cheerfulness to alight upon my limbs.”
